When I Dip, You Dip, We Dip!

You know the moment — the music swells, the crowd leans in, and then… the dip.
When it’s done well? Instant applause! When it’s not? Slight panic, anear-ankle injury, or worst... your butt's on the floor.
If you’re planning a wedding first dance, here’s what actually makes a dip look smooth, confident, and photo-worthy.
1️⃣ Confidence > Complexity
A good dip doesn’t have to be dramatic or acrobatic.
In fact, the best ones are:
Controlled
Intentional
Held for a beat
Confidence sells it. If you commit to it, the room will feel it.
Pro tip: Decide in advance that you're doing it. Half-commitment is what makes it awkward.
2️⃣ Solid Foot Placement
This is where most dips go wrong.
For a classic supported dip:
The lead partner plants their feet shoulder-width apart.
The dipping partner keeps one foot grounded for stability.
Weight stays centered — not pulling straight down.
It should feel like a supported lean, not a drop.
Pro tip: The dippee should point their foot and NOT lift their leg. A new trend is to bend the free leg and bring the foot to the knee. This is cute but could get your heel caught in your dress.
3️⃣ Eye Contact (Or a Big Smile)
This is what makes it emotional instead of technical.
At the bottom of the dip:
Lock eyes
Laugh
Smile
Or go for the kiss
That expression is what photographers capture and what your guests feel!
4️⃣ Timing With the Music
The best dips happen:
On the final beat
During a dramatic pause
Right at the song’s big finish
If the song ends and you're still wobbling into position, the magic’s gone.
Practice with your actual song so you know exactly when to go for it.
5️⃣ Hold It for 2–3 Seconds
This is huge.
Don’t:
Dip
Immediately pop back up (Unless your partner struggles to hold your weight. Then a rebound dip into a kiss at the top can be really lovely.)
Do:
Trust your parter
Use your legs, not your back
Dip & Pause
Let the crowd react
Then rise
That pause creates the cinematic moment. (Give your photographer a shot!)
6️⃣ Dress Awareness
Wedding dresses change everything.
Consider:
Tight silhouettes limit range
Long trains can get stepped on
Slippery floors affect balance
If you’re wearing heels, practice in them at least once.
7️⃣ Keep It Safe
A good dip never feels risky.
Avoid:
Throwing full body weight backward
Locking knees
Over-rotating
If either partner feels unsure, choose a shallower dip. It will still look great.
What Makes It Memorable?
It’s not the depth, it's not even the choreography. (although we think it adds the timing and smoothness you're looking for in that moment)
It’s:
The technique
The control
The confidence
The connection
The timing
The joy
If you’re laughing and fully in the moment, the dip will look amazing and everyone's heart will burst!
